The Captain Secretly Longed for a Dress Made of Tattered Lace and Blue Snow

Magnetic poem, circa 2008

Some people might say that putting a kitty cat in the foreground of a great work of cattle marker art is either an obvious device to fill some space or a desperate plea from the artist, to the effect of, “please, please, please love me!”

But WE all know that ships have cats, so in the story of a captain who longs for an otherworldly snow dress, a kitty is perfectly appropriate. In fact, according to an article by Patrick Roberts in Famous Felines, a cat named Mrs. Chippy accompanied Ernest Shackleton on the Endurance. Coincidentally, Mrs. Chippy was a tom cat.

Not that I’m above sprinkling a kitty here and there.
